UL508A Compliance Documentation SOP

Draft ID: SOP-0022 Version: 0.1.0 Owner: TBD Last reviewed: 2026-07-01

First draft for review. Cite comments by section & line — e.g. "§6 L4" means Section 6, line 4 (line numbers are in the left gutter and reset each section). Items marked TODO need Blitzpanel-specific confirmation.

1. Purpose

This procedure defines how Blitzpanel determines, documents, and retains the records required to support the UL508A listing of an industrial control panel.

It exists so that every panel leaving the shop carries a correct, defensible short-circuit current rating (SCCR), a compliant nameplate, and a complete file that can withstand a UL field inspection or customer audit.

A consistent compliance file also protects Blitzpanel's UL listing standing and gives Engineering and Quality a shared, repeatable basis for sign-off.

2. Scope

Applies to all panels built and shipped under Blitzpanel's UL508A listing, including new builds, re-quoted repeat jobs, and field-modified panels that re-enter the shop.

Covers SCCR determination, industrial control panel (ICP) nameplate content and placement, feeder and branch circuit documentation, and assembly of the UL508A job file.

Does not cover the engineering design review itself (see Design Checklist / Final Checkoff Gates SOP) or customer drawing sign-off (see Customer Submittal / Drawing Approval SOP), except where those steps feed compliance records into this file.

3. Definitions

SCCR — Short-Circuit Current Rating: the maximum available fault current the assembled panel is rated to withstand without hazardous damage.

ICP — Industrial Control Panel: an assembly of two or more components (power, control, or both) with the associated wiring, covered by a single UL508A listing.

Nameplate — the required panel marking that identifies the manufacturer, ratings, and listing/certification mark, per the panel's listing.

Feeder circuit — the incoming supply conductors and overcurrent protective device (OCPD) feeding the panel.

Branch circuit — an outgoing circuit from the panel to a load, protected by its own OCPD.

UL508A job file — the compiled set of engineering and quality records that substantiate the panel's compliance for a specific job/serial number.

4. Roles & Responsibilities

RoleResponsibility
Design EngineerDetermines SCCR, selects components against their component-level SCCR/interrupting ratings, and specifies nameplate content.
Quality / UL Compliance CoordinatorOwns this SOP, maintains the SCCR calculation method and label stock, and reviews the job file for completeness before release. TODO: confirm this role name/title in the org chart.
Assembly / ProductionApplies the correct nameplate and any component recognition/listing labels at the specified location; does not substitute components without engineering sign-off.
Final Test / QC InspectorVerifies nameplate content and placement, feeder/branch documentation, and label legibility as part of final inspection (see Job Traveler / Document Control SOP).
Document ControlFiles and retains the completed UL508A job file per the retention schedule.

5. Materials, Tools & Systems

SCCR calculation worksheet or software tool. TODO: name the approved SCCR calculation tool/spreadsheet (component method vs. tested/marked assembly method).

Component SCCR/interrupting-rating reference library, sourced from manufacturer data sheets or UL Product iQ / component recognition marks.

Approved UL508A nameplate stock and label printer, plus any additional recognized-component labels required by the BOM. TODO: confirm nameplate template/part number and printer/label system.

UL508A job file folder structure in the document control system. TODO: name the system of record (physical folder, ERP attachment, PLM, etc.).

6. Procedure

6.1 SCCR determination

Identify every component in the fault-current path (main OCPD, disconnects, contactors, overload relays, terminal blocks, busbar) and record each one's marked or listed SCCR/withstand rating.

Calculate the panel's overall SCCR using the component method (lowest-rated component governs each branch) unless the assembly has been tested/marked as a combination with a higher rating.

Compare the calculated SCCR against the customer-specified or default requirement for the installation; if the calculated value is lower, upgrade the limiting component(s) or apply current-limiting devices before proceeding. TODO: verify exact UL508A component-method requirements/tables before final sign-off.

Attach the completed SCCR worksheet, listing the governing component and final rating, to the job file.

6.2 Industrial control panel nameplate

Prepare the ICP nameplate with, at minimum: manufacturer name, panel/job identifier, voltage, phase and frequency, full-load/branch ampere rating, SCCR value and basis, and enclosure type rating. TODO: confirm the exact required nameplate data fields and their sequence per the current UL508A listing requirements.

Confirm the correct listing/certification mark is used for the panel as a whole (do not substitute an individual component's recognition mark for the panel's listing mark).

Apply the nameplate at the specified location (typically inside the enclosure door or adjacent to the main disconnect) so it is visible without removing covers. TODO: confirm Blitzpanel's standard nameplate placement location(s) by enclosure type.

Have Final Test / QC verify nameplate content against the SCCR worksheet and schematic before the panel is released.

6.3 Feeder & branch circuit data

Record the incoming feeder conductor size, insulation type, and ampacity, and the main OCPD type/rating/interrupting rating, cross-referenced to the schematic.

For each branch circuit leaving the panel, record the conductor size, the OCPD type/rating protecting it, and the connected load/device.

Verify conductor ampacity and OCPD ratings are consistent with the panel's overall SCCR basis and with applicable wiring/overcurrent protection requirements. TODO: verify applicable NEC/NFPA 79 feeder and branch circuit clauses before citing.

File the feeder/branch data sheet with the job file; flag any deviation from the approved schematic to Engineering before shipment.

6.4 Compiling the UL508A job file

Assemble the job file with: approved schematic, BOM, SCCR worksheet, nameplate proof (photo or approved artwork), feeder/branch data sheet, and final test/inspection record.

Cross-check the file against the job traveler to confirm every required compliance record is present before the panel ships (see Job Traveler / Document Control SOP).

Have the Quality / UL Compliance Coordinator review and sign off the completed file; hold shipment on any open item.

6.5 Retention & audit readiness

Retain the completed UL508A job file, indexed by job/serial number, for the defined retention period so it can be produced for a UL field inspection, AHJ request, or customer audit. TODO: set the retention period and storage location/system.

Conduct periodic internal self-audits of a sample of job files against this SOP to catch missing SCCR worksheets, nameplate errors, or incomplete feeder/branch records. TODO: set self-audit frequency and sample size.

7. Records & Documentation

SCCR worksheet showing the governing component and the calculated/verified panel SCCR.

Nameplate proof and, where applicable, photo evidence of placement on the shipped panel.

Feeder/branch circuit data sheet cross-referenced to the schematic and BOM.

Quality / UL Compliance Coordinator sign-off record for the completed job file, plus the internal self-audit log. TODO: confirm retention duration and system of record for all UL508A compliance records.

8. References
